Events at the University of Leeds for UK Disability History Month 2013

As part of the UK Disability History Month 2013, the University of Leeds has a series of events taking place. Entry to all the events is free, and all venues are wheelchair accessible.

Wednesday 20 November
Disability History Month launch event featuring Anne Rae (disabled activist, chair of Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People and former chair of British Council of Organisations of Disabled People): From the Origins of the Disabled People's Movement to Now - plus introductions to the Centre for Disability Studies (and its Disability Archive project) and LUU Disability Action Group. 15:00-17:00, Beech Grove House Seminar Room (33 on Leeds campus map).

Wednesday 27 November
SSP Film Club: 'Frida' (Julie Taymor, 2002). The Sociology & Social Policy Film Club presents a biography of the disabled revolutionary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (played by Salma Hayek), followed by a discussion about the importance and continued relevance of her work. In partnership with Disability Action Group and FemSoc. 16:30-19:00, Michael Sadler LG19 (78 on Leeds campus map).

Thursday 28 November
Disabookability - A Book and Poetry Open Floor Event. Part book share and part poetry performance - bring books about disability or with disabled characters to share or read from, and perform and/or listen to live and/or recorded poems about disability (if you would like to perform contact Cath Nichols c.s.nichols@leeds.ac.uk). Free tea, coffee and biscuits! 16:00-18:00, Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Building 12.06 (77 on Leeds campus map).

Wednesday 4 December
Reflections on Doing Disability Research: An audience with Colin Barnes. Colin Barnes, Professor of Disability Studies and founder of the Centre for Disability Studies at Leeds is retiring this year. At this celebration of his work he will speak about his involvement with the Disabled People's Movement, the development of Disability Studies here at Leeds and his thoughts regarding its future. 17:00-19:00, Western Lecture Theatre (18 on Leeds campus map) - with drinks reception from 16:00 in Liberty Building atrium (16 on Leeds campus map).

Wednesday 11 December
We Wish You a Merry Cripmas!
A festive end-of-term event about the disability issues associated with the 'season of giving' - featuring Christine Chettle (PhD student, Leeds University School of English) speaking about disability and agency in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (1843), and disabled activists and Disability Equality Trainers Gemma Nash and Gill Crawshaw speaking about why charity is not always a good thing for disabled people. Free mince pies! 15:00-17:00, Union Common Room / Hidden Café (32 on Leeds campus map) - time and location for this event still subject to confirmation, but hopefully will be as above.
